New Student-Led Initiative Takes Off

The following note was included in a recent newsletter sent on February 5, 2021, to our students and familiesfrom Kim Dow, Executive Director for our High School division.

A big thank you to our Middle School and High School students for sharing theirMartin Luther King, Jr. 100-day challenge projectideas in our Community Meeting this week. In recognition of Dr. King and the importance he placed on service, KLS students decided in mid-January to challenge one another to design a project proposal during Advisory that might affect positive change in our school community.

In this spirit, studentswatched this video together, and then considered these questions:

  1. What can we do in the spirit of Dr. King and his hopes for our country?
  2. What is the purpose of MLK Day?
  3. How can we effect change in our own community?

When designing their project proposals, students considered a range of topics related to equity, inclusion, and justice, including, but not limited to racial inequality, immigration, economic justice, environmental justice, and gender discrimination and stereotypes.

During the past few weeks, students have been working to design a non-violent direct actionwhere they could make substantial progress in 100 days. As part of our Community Meeting this week, they pitched these proposals to the rest of the Middle School and High School.

As a community, we will pick one of these proposals to undertake in the coming weeks. Every proposed project showcased incredible thoughtfulness and creativity.

Stay tuned for more updates about this developing story.
