the Classroom 

Khan Lab School’s Outdoor Education program at our Upper School campus is a vital part of our community, designed to connect students with the world around them through immersive, hands-on experiences. The program begins with a two-night orientation camping trip for 9th and 10th graders at a farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Throughout the year, students continue to engage in overnight camping and backpacking trips that build on these foundational experiences.

Our curriculum integrates thoughtfully designed activities and lessons to ensure students get the most out of each excursion. They are prepared with knowledge about the diverse environments they'll encounter and the skills they need for success. From hiking and camping to working on local farms, students learn outside traditional classrooms, progressing at their own pace while fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Connection to Nature
The Outdoor Education program introduces students to the greater outdoors, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for nature.

Kickoff and Orientation
Students begin the year with a two-night camping trip that serves as both an immersive introduction to outdoor living and an orientation to meet their classmates.

Hands-On Learning
Participants engage in essential camping skills, including cooking their own meals and setting up tents.

Group Activities
The trip includes collaborative activities such as hiking and sharing stories, promoting teamwork and community bonding.

Individual Reflection
Students also have opportunities for solo time, allowing for personal reflection and a deeper connection with their surroundings.

Future Growth Opportunities
Throughout the year, students can participate in optional overnight camping experiences and a more in-depth three-day backpacking trip.

Incorporating Student Interests
The program is flexible and can incorporate student interests beyond the core offerings, allowing for a more personalized experience.

Wilderness First Aid Certification
Students who choose to pursue the outdoor program will have the opportunity to earn a Wilderness First Aid certificate, enhancing their skills and preparedness for outdoor adventures.
