About KLS

Mission Statement

Our mission

We aim to empower each student with the right combination of knowledge, skills, and experiences to fully engage in the world and create their own meaning in it. As educators we strive to “get out of our own way” and follow our students' curiosity and passion as a guide for how to engage them in academic rigor. We believe in fully preparing students so they have options that matter to them as well as the tools of discernment to navigate their own life choices. As a community we learn together and are committed to empowering each other in continued growth and reflection.

A new model of education

Today’s traditional education model—which has been in place since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution—no longer optimally prepares children to meaningfully contribute to a world that values self-motivation, meaning, empathy, and creativity over compliance. In the 21st century, schools need to empower students to develop independent and critical thought, entrepreneurship, self-direction, and collaborative capabilities.

Khan Lab School was founded in 2014 by Salman "Sal" Khan (founder of Khan Academy) based on the vision he articulated in his book, The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined. As a laboratory school, we are dedicated to research-based instruction and furthering innovation in education. Thanks to our association with Khan Academy, we are leveraging the power of technology to better personalize the classroom. We strive to find the right balance between hands-on guidance and creating space for autonomous learning. By cultivating strong relationships as a community of learners, we can offer the right support and truly empower every student with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate their own path and become lifelong learners.

“There is no magic formula to make kids more creative; rather, it’s a way to give light and space and time to the creativity that already exists in each of us”  - Sal Khan
